“Building a Cloud Native IoT Solution”
Sqippa is an IoT platform wirelessly monitoring various sensors and devices for multiple dwelling unit (MDU) building management and maintenance. As an example Sqippa can help building owners or facility managers establish the risk of toxic leaks such as carbon monoxide or legionella bacteria or even flooding. The system is also able to determine a system’s maintenance needs, monitoring air quality, temperature and humidity, which can be adjusted by zone when needed. The Sqippa platform is an initiative from HBI Bisscheroux and applies cost-covering tariffs.
HBI had a clear vision to create Sqippa as an open interface IoT platform, supporting a wide range of building devices and sensors including their own devices, and 3rd party devices. The platform, built on AWS services, needed to be cost effective and highly scalable. Merapar helped HBI along their evolving product journey to ensure the platform was designed and built with simplicity to integrate 3rd party devices, made use of the latest cloud technologies and will grow with HBI’s needs.
The most important requirements for the Sqippa cloud native solution were:
- Meet strict cost targets aligned with the lifetime of the products
- Real-time data processing and data lake creation for future analysis
- Scalable from the 1000 to 100.000 devices for each platform
Merapar developed a custom integration layer in AWS, to simplify and enhance the interface between the consumer and the back end service from Things Network (an open LoRaWAN network)
All devices are connected through “The Things Network (See https://www.thethingsnetwork.org/)”
Once the data from devices is available in our solution the data is:
- Immediately creates alarms push notifications, sent by email or SMS (depending on consumer settings)
- Data is stored for time-series analysis in a database (DynamoDB) for 30 days
- Data is stored in archive storage on S3 for multiple years
The User Interface (web) is hosted via CloudFront / S3 providing incremental consumer value from the retrieved data:
- real time display of the latest received value
- instant access to all available data
All services are built serverless to ensure the system can grow in a cost efficient manner.
Building infrastructure as code tooling using the Serverless Application Model (SAM) rapidly delivered a scalable and robust solution.

HBI, with their Sqippa platform, now has a future proof Cloud native system. The system adapts to changes in demand to which it can offer the best value for their end customers.
