Background on the case
RTS Intercoms designs and manufactures professional communication systems, offering wired, wireless, and IP-based solutions, including digital matrices, beltpacks, and headsets. Their systems are essential in broadcasting, live events, and industrial applications, ensuring clear and reliable communication for complex operations worldwide.
The challenge
Revolutionizing Intercom Communication
As the industry shifts towards more agile workflows and a financial move from CAPEX to OPEX models, RTS Intercoms sought to build a hybrid and cloud-only intercom. The key challenge was to develop a cloud-based intercom that matched the quality and performance of on-premise systems, capable of being spun up on demand within any AWS cloud region. Crucially, to ensure acceptance by major broadcasters, the solution required deep integration into the AWS ecosystem, culminating in a successful AWS Foundational Technical Review. Additionally, RTS aimed to develop a software-based key panel to enable reliable and smooth communication from anywhere.
The solution
Enter RVOC: Cloud Innovation Powers RTS Intercoms’ Next-Gen System on AWS
Merapar, leveraging its agile project approach, undertook the challenge to develop a system tailored to the precise needs of RTS Intercoms. We initiated the project in 2023 with a Proof-of-Concept, successfully demonstrating that RTS Intercoms’ vision was viable on the AWS platform. This PoC provided essential proof that the Total Cost of Ownership, End-to-End latency, and general performance were achievable against their defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
Following the PoC, Merapar continued with multiple scrum teams to develop the complete solution, ensuring it was ready for its successful launch at NAB 2025. Within the solution, Merapar developed the following core components:
- RVOC Elevate: A fully serverless backend running on AWS, including its associated frontend, designed to manage customer demands. This application allows customers to seamlessly sign-up and request licenses, while also enabling RTS employees to support and manage customer needs efficiently.
- RVOC Engine: In close collaboration with application specialists from RTS, Merapar developed the intercom control and audio components. Through multiple iterations, a robust, cloud-native approach for running a scalable and secure intercom was developed.
- RVOC Edge: Merapar, in partnership with Cadera Design, developed this software-based key panel. Created in React Native, RVOC Edge is compatible with all major mobile operating systems and platforms, ensuring connectivity from anywhere.
Furthermore, through close collaboration with beta customers, Merapar developed a highly secure solution that has gained acceptance from major broadcasters and their stringent security departments, proving our success in delivering comprehensive, high-quality technology solutions for complex, real-time environments.
