Eneco's Toon Thermostat Connectivity Platform

Toon IoT platform redesigned for strategic growth
Quby (now Eneco), the innovator behind the Toon smart thermostat, provides groundbreaking services that enhance well-being and bring peace of mind to customers. Their offerings include the Toon smart thermostat as well as data-driven tools like the Verspilchecker, an energy management solution that helps consumers analyze their appliance energy use and compare it to industry standards.
To align with their ambitious growth strategy and dramatically lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), Quby required a future-ready Device-to-Cloud architecture. To achieve this, they partnered with Merapar, entrusting them to transform their Freeview infrastructure into a state-of-the-art, cloud-native solution powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS).
The challenge
Building a scalable, cost-effective smart energy platform
Having migrated their services to AWS several years ago, the next logical step was to fully embrace cloud-native solutions to maximize cost efficiency and scalability. Achieving this required rethinking their infrastructure to meet evolving demands. This is where Merapar supported Quby on their continuous cloud transformation journey. The key challenges for implementing a cloud-native solution included:
- Big Data Storage and Processing: Enabling near real-time analytics and advanced data processing to deliver actionable insights and monetize the platform effectively.
- 24/7 Connectivity: Ensuring a proven and reliable solution to maintain uninterrupted service delivery.
- Cost Competitiveness: Striking the perfect balance between performance and operational costs to remain competitive in the market.
The solution
Tailored solution for real-time data and seamless integration
Merapar performed extensive research on the current cloud architecture trends and deployments. They concluded that the most cost-effective, proven cloud technologies were available within AWS to fulfill the requirements. A direct HTTPS connection is used for data ingest and compute offload. An IoT MQTT connection over a websocket is available for 24/7 bi-directional communication with the Toon device. This guarantees 24/7 availability for their existing customer service centres. This serverless setup guarantees a cost-effective and secure connectivity layer.
For the deployment Merapar made use of CloudFormation, where a complete environment can be created from Jenkins in just under an hour. Rolling updates can be deployed without any disruption to the end customer.

The Results
Optimized energy data workflows with enhanced reliability
Quby now operates on a future-ready platform designed for efficiency, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. By leveraging AWS core components and Merapar’s expertise, they achieved a seamless migration without requiring changes to third-party APIs or identity systems.
The platform includes a reliable connectivity layer, advanced data processing for real-time insights, and optimized workflows that reduce costs. Data from Toon devices, apps, and third-party hardware is processed efficiently to support Quby’s business processes and big data needs. This robust solution not only lowers total costs but also ensures Quby is well-positioned for growth and innovation in the energy industry.
